5th Grade Student DAR Winner

MCGS 5th grader, Brielle Ditterline, was  recently recognized as one of this year's National Society Daughter's of the American Revolution Mt. Carmel Chapter Essay winners. At their February meeting, Brielle presented her essay and was awarded with a certificate.  Teachers and family joined the recognition presentation.

As part of its mission to support the study of American History, the NSDAR sponsors a history essay contest for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders each year. The competition is open to all students in public, private, and parochial schools, as well as registered home-study programs. The Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation’s great history and learn about history in a new light.

This year, in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the DAR  launched the "Patriots of the American Revolution DAR Essay Contest.” The students were to find Patriots to write about who interested and inspired them.  Students were asked to discuss how their chosen Patriot contributed to the founding of the nation. Essays were judged for historical accuracy, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the quality and scope of references, particularly the use of primary sources.
