Science Fair at SIU


Mt. Carmel Junior High sent 6 projects to compete in the IJAS Region 8 Science Fair held at SIU Carbondale on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.  Students earned the right to compete by receiving the top scores at the local judging. Shade Loudermilk, Macy Mandrell, Wyatt Alka, Marissa Goldman, and Madisyn Etheridge competed individually. Maria Kennard and Kiersten James competed as a partner group. Jayden Pettyjohn, unfortunately, caught the flu and could not compete, Students were judged on oral presentation skills, visual display, a written report, and evidence of scientific process skills.  MCJHS students awarded the top rating or "Gold" ranking based on the scores received, were Shade Loudermilk, Macy Mandrell, Wyatt Alka, Marissa Goldman, and Madisyn Etheridge. Maria Kennard and Kiersten James received a “Silver” ranking. Sarah Dougherty is their 8th grade Science Teacher and Sponsor.

Students receiving special recognition or awards at the Region 08 Science Fair held at SIU Carbondale on March 03, 2020, included:L-R Shade Loudermilk received a bid to compete at the State Science Fair. Madisyn Etheridge received a bid to compete at the State Science Fair.   Sarah Dougherty is their 8th grade Science Teacher and Sponsor. Macy Mandrell received a bid to compete at the State Science Fair and Wyatt Alka won a monetary award with matching funds for the school from the Department of Aviation Technologies. He also received a bid to compete at the State Science Fair on May 02, 2020 at Millikan University in Decatur, Illinois.  Congratulations on these special accomplishments!
